Why do pets get sick just before you go away?
They have seen the backpacks. The packing pile. The change in routine. They know!
And they strike back. With their most potent weapon... GUILT.
Last Thursday, my puppy woke me up in the middle of the night crying and panting in pain. Oh no! After sitting with him for a while I figured out that his lower back was the problem. I gave him an extra dose of his anti-inflammatory arthritis pills and he eventually settled down. So that was sleepless night number one.
The next evening I found my kitty crouched in his 'pain pose'. The one where he is sitting motionless like a rigid sphinx, not eating, blinking or drinking. Oh no! After careful examination, I found what appeared to be an abscess under his cheek. I touched it and - eeewww - the abscess burst and pus/blood poured from his mouth. Not a happy puddy tat. So that became sleepless night number two.
The vet has made a fortune from me this week. Thank the lord for pet insurance!
Shiraz made a full recovery and is back to his regular schedule of sleeping, peeing and eating. Considering he is 15 years old and completely blind, that is fairly respectable behaviour.
Unfortunately Murphy hasn't got arthritis. It turned out to be a tumour on his spine (sob!) and he is now on 8 hourly codeine to keep his pain under control. It's the same drug and dose Mum was prescribed when her cancer was diagnosed. Uh oh, here we go again!!
Poor wee puppy. I feel dreadful about leaving him but hopefully he will be happy here at home, in front of the fire, with our nice housesitter and all will go well until we return.
If they wanted to make me feel guilty about leaving them. They succeeded.
[And in case you were wondering, my pony Sam is quite well thanks. Keep your hooves crossed. I don't want him to join in the guilt-fest.]
