Return to Zinting

20 years ago I worked as a chambermaid/kitchen hand in the Austria alps at a guesthouse called ‘Zinting’, on a farm high above the village of Brixen im Thale. Elfriede and Erhard, the owners of Zinting, came to visit us in Melbourne 11 years ago and they stayed with us, in our tiny townhouse in Albert Park. In return, we are staying in their gorgeous 400 year old guesthouse in the mountains. Fair swap!

Arriving at Zinting was like being in a time warp. The house looked exactly as I left it 20 years ago. The colours, the smells, the flowers, the cows, the view - oh the view! It all felt so familar. I was relieved to find that my memory was accurate - that I hadn't remembered some idealised version. It really IS that fabulous.

After we settled in, I went up to the attic to see the bedroom I lived in for three months. It was still the same. My comfy bed, my standalone shower unit (nickname, the tardis), and the same creaking floorboards. Ahh lovely.
